Most of my ceramic work involves saggars and wood-ash glazes on traditional forms. In my saggars, I nestle pots into sawdust, wood shards, rock salt, pine needles and charcoal. I seal the saggars almost completely, so that there is a very heavy reduction atmosphere around the pots.
These saggars are fired in a gas kiln, which I also fire in heavy reduction to cones 10 – 12. The addition of wood and small amounts of salt during the firing process have some effect on my glazed pots placed throughout the rest of the kiln. I try to make pieces that I will not be able to exactly reproduce.
